California State Park Peace Officers
Association
December 13, 2011
Welcome BVST 36
Cadets!
Congratulations on
your new position and welcome to the
beginning of a great career as a State Park
Peace Officer.
A New Beginning
On March 1st, 2011,
your fellow SPPOs created a new employee
association: California State Park Peace
Officers Association, CSPPOA. Our current
primary goal is to work with the Peace
Officers of California (P.o.C.) organization
in the ongoing campaign to create an
employee union made up solely of sworn
officers. When we began this latest campaign
for fair and effective representation in
2006, over 97% of the rangers and lifeguards
in the field voiced strong support.
Additionally, CSPPOA continues to be
politically active telling our story in
order to win support from the legislature
and governor for SPPOs.
An Important
Choice for Cadets
As I discussed with
you on the evening of December 3rd you have
a choice to make as far as your member
status with CSLEA (BU7). Your choices are:
Full dues paying
member (approx. $75.37/month),
Fair Share member
(approx. $65.37/month) or
Fair Share Fee
Objector (currently $32.65/month).
I recommend that you
join at the 3rd option in order to support
the goal of obtaining a sworn officer only
union. Fair Share Fee Objector (FSFO) level
means CSLEA will still handle contract
negotiations and grievances. Under this
option you would not be receiving legal
defense through CSLEA. However, joining POC
($30/month) supports our overall goal of a
sworn officer only union and provides you
with excellent legal defense (often referred
to as LDF) coverage.
How do you choose
the 3rd option?
1) Fill out the
attached letter and return it to CSLEA
2) Join P.o.C. as
a member with legal defense.
I would be happy to
answer any questions you have.
